Serena Williams’ legacy as an American professional tennis player is without a doubt one of the most recognizable in the world. So far this season, she’s finished as the world’s top player for the third time, racking up a 78-4 record with two Grand Slam titles and nine other Tour-level crowns. Despite her controversies on and off the court, Serena has proven to always accept a challenge and meet her match. She’s unstoppable, fast, and determined to go down in history as one of the best players to step foot on the court.
With that being said, there’ll always be competition, especially in the match of tennis. Who could possibly stop Serena’s rise to world domination in the game of tennis? Here are the top three contenders.
1. Victoria Azarenka is a Belarusian professional tennis player, a former World No. 1, and currently ranks as No.2. She defeated Williams’ in the finals of the Qatar Total Open in February, and again in the championship match of the U.S. Open warm-up tournament in Cincinnati. She also reads Serena’s serve better than anyone, pouncing on big bombs with trademark pinpoint accuracy. In order for Vika to continue to challenge Serena this coming year, she needs to do two things: fix her ineffective second serve and stay healthy.
2. Simona Halep is a 22-year-old Romanian professional tennis player who flew under the radar in 2013, and is currently ranked World No.11. This past season she won six titles, and has the athleticism and stroke production of an upcoming champion.
3. Li Na is a Chinese professional tennis player, who rose to prominence in after she won the 2011 French Open singles title, making it the first and only Grand Slam singles champion from an Asian country. In 2014, Li is one of the top players to keep an eye out on the court.
